SELF CONTROL or LACK OF

Matthew 11:28-30
1 Peter 1:13-16    13Therefore prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Self control is the ability to control one's emotions, behavior and desires in order to efficiently manage one's future. This is the definition found in wikipedia . Ideally, we want to be able to control ourselves especially when faced with temptation because if we allow ourselves to lose control we could become addicted to sin.  But this is easier said than done. Like every journey, the first steps to develop self-control are all important. One way to enhance self-control is to avoid tempting situations as much as possible.

If you feel you lack self-control to the point of being captive to sin - alcoholism, food addiction; pornography, smoking, abusive drug use, domineering personality, etc.;  and want to regain your former self, there is hope. Knowing precisely what you want to achieve enables your seeing the different means and opportunity when they arise. You know where to concentrate your efforts.  Here is “Your one-day-at-a-time objective”.

1. Positive Statements: Positive affirmations can counter negative messages. Make definitive, positive statements, not conditional ones. Say. “I will not drink.” Do not say, “Probably won’t drink,” or “I won’t drink if…”

2. Be Precise: We have the power to define ourselves and our relationships to life. We need confidence to encounter new experiences and to try new behaviors and changes, and to be able to sustain them. The more specific they are, the better we can identify where change is needed. Say “I will overcome this addiction on food…”.

3. Set Priorities: Perspective is your key to personal addictions recovery. Since recovery requires shifting our relationship with ourselves, you may need to change and enlarge your perspective of yourself. This will include your emotions, other people, and of life in general. Our perspective toward life dictates our relationship with it.

4. Written Goal-Setting:  In the medical world of my professional life, if it wasn’t written (recorded in the patient’s chart) it wasn’t done. Period. Written is reference. You have a ready reminder of where you are going and how you are going to get there.

5. Take Daily Small Steps. Make the big into small doable bites. Don’t choke on your own expectations.

6. Reasonable Goals: In your Goal-Setting make the objectives something you can accomplish, within your control. Have goals of personal performance, what you yourself can do.

Above all else, reach out to God. Avail yourself to the power of prayer.
Three excellent examples of personal prayer companions are:

1. The Serenity Prayer. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change. Courage to change the things I can. And wisdom to know the difference

2.  Prayer for the AddictedGod of mercy, we bless you in the name of Son, Jesus Christ, who ministered to all who came to him. Give your strength to (name of the person), one of your children, enfold him / her in your love and restore him/her to the freedom of God’s children...

3. Act of Hope. O my God, relying on y our almighty power,
infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of your grace, and live everlasting thru the merits of
Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.

Remember God loves you and He will see you thru this.
God bless!
